At 22, Russell is the youngest starting shortstop since 21-year-old Alex Rodriguez in 1997. He is also the youngest Cub to start for the National League, passing 24-year-olds Augie Galan (1936), Ernie Banks (1955), Ryne Sandberg (1984) and Kris Bryant (2016).
With Bryant, Russell, Zobrist and Rizzo, this will be the second time that an All-Star starting infield has four players from the same team. The 1963 Cardinals had 1B Bill White, 2B Julian Javier, SS Dick Groat and 3B Ken Boyer in the starting lineup.
The only other time the Cubs had four players in the starting lineup was in 1936, with CF Augie Galan, 2B Billy Herman, RF Frank Demaree and C Gabby Hartnett.
This is the ninth All-Star Game with multiple teams putting four or more players in the starting lineup, but only the third since expansion in 1961. The 1980 contest had four Dodgers (Davey Lopes, Reggie Smith, Steve Garvey, Bill Russell) and four Yankees (Willie Randolph, Reggie Jackson, Graig Nettles, Bucky Dent). Along with the aforementioned Red Sox quartet in 2005, the Cardinals had Albert Pujols, Jim Edmonds, David Eckstein and Chris Carpenter.
