With Ortiz, Bogaerts, Betts and Bradley, the Red Sox have four All-Star starters for the first time since 2005, when they had Johnny Damon, Ortiz, Manny Ramirez and Jason Varitek.

San Diego Padres ASG Starting Designated Hitters

Tony Gwynn1997
Wil Myers 2016

With the game in San Diego, let's take a look at players from the hosting team that started in the cleanup spot:

Bill Dickey (1939 Yankees)
Johnny Mize (1940 Cardinals)
Johnny Mize (1942 Giants)
Ted Kluszewki (1953 Reds)
Mickey Mantle (1960 Yankees)
Orlando Cepeda (1961 Giants)
Tony Perez (1970 Reds)
Steve Garvey (1980 Dodgers)
Fred McGriff (1992 Padres)
Bret Boone (2001 Mariners)
Jason Bay (2006 Pirates)
Alex Rodriguez (2008 Yankees)
David Wright (2013 Mets)

McGriff makes the list for hitting fourth in 1992, the last time the Padres hosted the game. This is the only other time that a San Diego player started in the fourth slot.

Here are the 12 host players to hit a home run:

Joe DiMaggio (1939 Yankees)
Ted Williams (1946 Red Sox) (hit two)
Vic Wertz (1951 Tigers)
George Kell (1951 Tigers)
Al Rosen (1954 Indians) (hit two)
Larry Doby (1954 Indians)
Jim Gilliam (1959 Dodgers)
Harmon Killebrew (1965 Twins)
Frank Howard (1969 Senators)
Hank Aaron (1972 Braves)
Sandy Alomar Jr. (1997 Indians)
Chipper Jones (2000 Braves)

The two host players to be named Most Valuable Player are Sandy Alomar Jr. (1997 Indians) and Pedro Martinez (1999 Red Sox).

Fellow Padre Drew Pomeranz joins Frazier on the N.L. squad. Six host pitchers have picked up the win:

Johnny Vander Meer (1939 Reds)
Gene Conley (1955 Braves)
Stu Miller (1961 Giants)
Jerry Reuss (1980 Dodgers)

Jay Howell (1987 Athletics)
Roger Clemens (2004 Astros)

Five host pitchers have recorded a save:

Kazahiro Sasaki (2001 Mariners)
Glen Perkins (2014 Twins)

Buster Posey 2016

Chicago Cubs ASG Starting First Basemen

Phil Cavarretta 1944
Ernie Banks 1965
Derrek Lee 2005
Anthony Rizzo 2016

This is just the fourth start by a Cubs first baseman. Only two of the original 16 franchises have had fewer All-Star starts at first base. The Pirates have only two (Elbie Fletcher 1943, Dale Long 1956) and the Phillies have just three (Pete Rose 1981-82, John Kruk 1993). The Indians also have only four starts (Al Rosen 1954, Vic Wertz 1957, Jim Thome 1998-99).

Miami Marlins ASG Starting Center Fielders

Marcell Ozuna 2016

Ozuna goes in for the injured Dexter Fowler and makes the the sixth All-Star start by a Marlin. Gary Sheffield was at third base in 1993, Hanley Ramirez was at shortstop in 2008, 2009 and 2010, and Giancarlo Stanton was the DH in 2014. The Padres, Brewers and Rays are now the only three teams that have never had an All-Star starter in center field.

Colorado Rockies ASG Starting Left Fielders

Carlos Gonzalez 2013

Addison Russell 2016

At 22, Russell is the youngest starting shortstop since 21-year-old Alex Rodriguez in 1997. He is also the youngest Cub to start for the National League, passing 24-year-olds Augie Galan (1936), Ernie Banks (1955), Ryne Sandberg (1984) and Kris Bryant (2016)

With Bryant, Russell, Zobrist and Rizzo, this will be the second time that an All-Star starting infield has four players from the same team. The 1963 Cardinals had 1B Bill White, 2B Julian Javier, SS Dick Groat and 3B Ken Boyer in the starting lineup.

The only other time the Cubs had four players in the starting lineup was in 1936, with CF Augie Galan, 2B Billy Herman, RF Frank Demaree and C Gabby Hartnett.

This is the ninth All-Star Game with multiple teams putting four or more players in the starting lineup, but only the third since expansion in 1961. The 1980 contest had four Dodgers (Davey Lopes, Reggie Smith, Steve Garvey, Bill Russell) and four Yankees (Willie Randolph, Reggie Jackson, Graig Nettles, Bucky Dent). Along with the aforementioned Red Sox quartet in 2005, the Cardinals had Albert Pujols, Jim Edmonds, David Eckstein and Chris Carpenter.

Vida Blue 1978
Rick Reuschel 1989
Jason Schmidt 2003
Tim Lincecum 2009
Matt Cain 2012
Johnny Cueto 2016

Cueto forms an all-Giants battery with Buster Posey. This is the 35th same-team starting battery, the first since Posey caught Matt Cain in 2012. Cueto is the first pitcher to start the All-Star Game in his first year with a new team since Kenny Rogers did it in 2006 as a Tiger.

This is the second All-Star Game with a Giants/White Sox pitching matchup. Jason Schmidt and Esteban Loaiza earned the starts in 2003.
