Teams with Three Cy Young Award Winners

When the Tigers traded for David Price last week, I made a list of teams with three previous Cy Young Award winners on their staff, thanks to this crazy spreadsheet.

With Price's Tigers debut last night, Detroit becomes the 15th team to pitch three former Cy Young hurlers in one season.

1980 Rangers Fergie Jenkins 1971 Gaylord Perry 1972, 1978 Sparky Lyle 1977
1981 Orioles Jim Palmer 1973, 1975-76 Mike Flanagan 1979 Steve Stone 1980
1993 Braves Steve Bedrosian 1987 Tom Glavine 1991 Greg Maddux 1992-93
1994 Braves Steve Bedrosian 1987 Tom Glavine 1991 Greg Maddux 1992-94
1995 Braves Steve Bedrosian 1987 Tom Glavine 1991 Greg Maddux 1992-95
1997 Braves Tom Glavine 1991 Greg Maddux 1992-95 John Smoltz 1996
1998 Braves Tom Glavine 1991, 1998 Greg Maddux 1992-95 John Smoltz 1996
1998 Red Sox Bret Saberhagen 1985, 1989 Dennis Eckersley 1992 Pedro Martinez 1997
1999 Braves Tom Glavine 1991, 1998 Greg Maddux 1992-95 John Smoltz 1996
2000 Yankees Dwight Gooden 1985 Roger Clemens 1986-87, 1991, 1997-98 David Cone 1994
2001 Red Sox Bret Saberhagen 1985, 1989 David Cone 1994 Pedro Martinez 1997, 1999-2000
2001 Braves Tom Glavine 1991, 1998 Greg Maddux 1992-95 John Smoltz 1996
2002 Braves Tom Glavine 1991, 1998 Greg Maddux 1992-95 John Smoltz 1996
2009 Giants Randy Johnson 1995, 1999-2002 Barry Zito 2002 Tim Lincecum 2008-09
2014 Tigers Justin Verlander 2011 David Price 2012 Max Scherzer 2014

Three other squads had two Cy winners plus that season's eventual winner, the 1978 Yankees (Catfish Hunter, Lyle, Ron Guidry), the 1980 Orioles (Palmer, Flanagan, Stone) and the 1996 Braves (Maddux, Glavine, Smoltz).

For several of these staffs, one or two of the pitchers were past their primes. Even with Verlander's struggles, I'd say the 2014 Tigers are closer to Maddux/Glavine/Smoltz than to Jenkins/Perry/Lyle.

10 of the first 14 teams made the postseason, although only the 1997-99 Braves had the three Cy's in their postseason rotation.

In 1997, Maddux, Glavine and Smoltz rolled through the Astros in the NLDS (3-0, 1.88 ERA). Maddux pitched well in the NLCS, but Glavine (8 R, 13.1 IP) and Smoltz (5 R, 6 IP) were roughed up in a 4-2 loss to the Marlins.

The next year, another NLDS sweep (1.66 ERA for the big three) begat another NLCS upset, this time at the hands of the Padres. The three aces pitched to a 3.16 ERA and were outdueled by Andy Ashby, Kevin Brown and series MVP Sterling Hitchcock.

Atlanta reached the Fall Classic in 1999, but were the bats were silenced (.200/.283/.277, nine runs) in a Yankees sweep.
